چکیده
The main objective of this research is to analyse the lithic technology applied obsidian, a raw material popular amongst pre-Columbian populations from Northwestern Argentina (NWA) because its social and symbolic value. analysed assemblage comes archaeological site Villavil 2 (VV2), located in Hualfín Valley (Catamarca, Argentina) distant ca. 100 - 200 kms nearest sources material. VV2 was discovered 2015 by one authors shows particular presence rock art which had not previously been registered area. associated Late Inka Period (ca. 10th 16th centuries CE). So far, we suggest that place temporal, but periodical use best fits with what would call ceremonial space.
comprises totality obsidian elements collected both superficial stratigraphic contexts. It divided into three typological classes: tools (projectile points), flakes natural sharp edges (FNSE) waste products (WP). We did identify cores. analysis considered following variables: knapping methods techniques, size, amount cortex, flake type edge types.
At VV2, points are only retouched made obsidian. They correspond triangular unstemmed concave-based type, very common during Late-Inka Periods, they were shaped using perimetral bifacial pressure technique, possibly blanks. FNSEs’ size small, present scarce cortex. On other hand, abundance small-sized WPs remarkable. found same context attest complete finish (edge retouch).
results let us infer point-shaping tasks carried out situ. Moreover, implemented involved major production efforts skills, contrast those local knapping. possible curated strategy related difficulty accessing allochthonous Instead, these choices could reflect meanings. According linguistic ethnohistoric information, brightness transparency propitiatory win favour w'akas. Furthermore, NWA long-distance exchange an ancient tradition lasted for long time. Obtaining display ability group access resources legitimize their political status. Nevertheless, cannot forget also important making different artefacts subsistence activities.

Characterizing the Late Pleistocene MSA Lithic Technology of Sibudu, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Studies of the African Middle Stone Age (MSA) have become central for defining the cultural adaptations that accompanied the evolution of modern humans. While much of recent research in South Africa has focused on the Still Bay and Howiesons Poort (HP), periods following these technocomplexes were often neglected. Here we examine lithic assemblages from Sibudu that post-date the HP to further t...
متن کاملLate Quaternarystratigraphy, sedimentologyand geochemistryof anunderfilled lakebasin in the Puna plateau (northwest Argentina)
Depositional models of ancient lakes in thin-skinned retroarc foreland basins rarely benefit from appropriate Quaternary analogues. To address this, we present new stratigraphic, sedimentological and geochemical analyses of four radiocarbon-dated sediment cores from the Pozuelos Basin (PB; northwest Argentina) that capture the evolution of this low-accommodation Puna basin over the past ca. 43 ...

Technological variability in the Late Palaeolithic lithic industries of the Egyptian Nile Valley: The case of the Silsilian and Afian industries
During the Nubia Salvage Campaign and the subsequent expeditions from the 1960's to the 1980's, numerous sites attributed to the Late Palaeolithic (~25-15 ka) were found in the Nile Valley, particularly in Nubia and Upper Egypt. This region is one of the few to have allowed human occupations during the dry Marine Isotope Stage 2 and is therefore key to understanding how human populations adapte...
متن کاملMeasuring the Complexity of Lithic Technology
Assessments of the complexity of lithic technologies coming from different time periods, regions, or hominid species are recurrent features of the literature on Paleolithic archaeology. Yet the notion of lithic complexity is often defined intuitively and qualitatively, which can easily lead to circular arguments and makes difficult the comparison of assemblages across different regions and time...
